Humble House started with simple curiosity and developed into a passion for collecting and preserving this unique furniture.
Humble House Australia was established in Canberra in 1998, with the opening of a gallery and showroom. Since that time Humble House has built up a strong reputation amongst collectors, interior designers and discerning buyers. The launch of Humble House in the UK presents you with the opportunity to purchase and share in the pleasure of these quite exceptional items of furniture.
The Craftsmen
The Craftsmen are true masters of their art and have been with Humble House since the beginning. They have been trained in traditional Chinese methods of furniture making and restoration. They use their own handmade tools to undertake careful, time-consuming restoration with minimal interference, to preserve the character and features of the original piece.
To watch these artisans at work is a truly inspiring experience. Lining the walls around the carpenters' benches are handmade tools; wooden hammers, hand drills, bamboo implements and palm tree brushes to polish surfaces. There are no power tools to be seen.
The work can take days or weeks, time doesn't matter, it's the final outcome that is important.
Our Values
There is a strong commitment to the well being of the craftsmen and their families, all of whom live in purpose built housing in Beijing. Pride is taken in providing them with a high standard of accommodation and excellent working conditions. Meals are served by the resident cook and fresh produce is grown in the garden beside the workshops. The skill and passion of these craftsmen and their families is key to the success of Humble House.
