At Humble House we also have a number of smaller items of furniture.

Screen sets and window panels

Screen sets are very popular in traditional Chinese homes, where large rooms need to be divided into smaller spaces.  These screens are normally highly decorated and feature carved latticework panels, or panels where paintings would be placed.  Window panels are also highly decorated latticework panels that are designed to provide dappled light inside the home.

 

Washbasin stands

Washing has always been important in China, for reasons of both hygiene and ritual.  Whilst most people would use a bucket on the floor to wash, the more wealthy homes would have beautifully carved washbasin stands.  These not only provide a stand for the washbasin, but also a rack for clothes or a towel, a small tray for soap and often would have a small panel to hold a mirror.

 

Sewing, Cosmetics and Jewellery Containers.

These are small boxes with drawers designed for keeping jewellery, cosmetics or sewing items.  These small containers are usually beautifully painted or lacquered, some jewellery and cosmetics containers also have small mirrors that fold up from the lid.

 

Food containers

There are many different items designed for transporting and containing food.  These vary from small square individual cake boxes up to large 3 tier containers designed to transport food between restaurants and places of work or to wedding banquets.

We also have in our collection a variety of other items of Chinese art including pictures and ceramics.
