Official Hat Chairs with Protruding Ends (pair)

Catalogue Reference 100

( Product ID 0000000011 ) ( Category: Chairs, Stool and Benches )

These chairs are particularly elegant. They are very simple in their design, reflecting a style developed in the Ming dynasty and which remained popular to the present day. The carving on the back panel features a longevity character, flanked by a pair of dragons. The dragon is a powerful motif and was always used to symbolise the emperor of China. It has evolved to become a symbol of strength and authority. The longevity medallion is either the character 'shou' meaning long life or the character wan' meaning 10,000. The both represent a wish for long life. Longevity spirals are a geometric pattern formed from the 'wan zi' character which is most closely associated with Buddhism and is a symbol of long life. While the design came to China from India, the pattern itself is ancient and can be found in other Eastern cultures.
The front leg posts extend to the armrest while the back leg posts extend to the back support all the way to the top rail. From structural point of view, using single piece of timber in the vital supporting posts reinforces the structural strength.
The apron under the seat and between the front legs features a wave motif. The wave motifs are representative of water. Water, being an essential element for crops to grow, represents prosperity through the wish for abundant harvests.grego
